For this assignment we were asked to consider five beliefs that we have about mathematics education and how they impact what happens in the classroom. Remaining true to core beliefs is important for every teacher.
In this assignment we were asked to take a task with lower cognitive demand and modify it to raise the level of cognitive demand. It is important to be able to recognize high quality tasks and to be able to modify lower demand tasks to raise that demand.
This assignment required us to create a curriculum evaluation document to assist in choosing a mathematics curriculum for a grade level, building, or district. I modified a document that we had already used in my district. Being part of a curriculum adoption team is an important role for a math specialist.
This assignment required us to create an observation form to use when coaching a mathematics teacher. I chose to modify the form that is used in my district. Although a math specific document might better inform a math specialist and indicate opportunities for coaching.
After conducting an observation and meeting with a colleague, this is my reflection.
In this assignment we were asked to create a tiered assessment on a math concept at the level that we teach. I used 3rd grade and a module test from EngageNY (our district curriculum). Being able to recognize whether test items are low or high level items helps to determine where students are in their math concept mastery.
You will find an answer key here, along with the DOK level and my rational for assigning that DOK.
In this assignment we were asked to write an email to a district leader promoting NCTM principles of mathematics teaching and learning. This particular letter addresses assessment in our district. As a math specialist, having quality common assessments allows us to provide necessary interventions in a timely fashion.

As a final project we were required to plan and present a professional development session. In order to choose something relevant to the teachers in my building, I created a needs assessment in the form of a Google Form survey.
This is the outline for the professional development experience I created. The topic was on using a Rekenrek to develop and assess number sense for students kindergarten through second grade.
Another Google Form survey was created to solicit feedback once the professional development session was completed.
This is my reflection on the final professional development project. Reflection is a needed skill in order to adjust and improve our practice.
